Duke Nukem Forever

As some of you game fans out there have no doubt seen already (since it's appeared on every gaming blog I've seen this weekend) there has been a new screenshot for Duke Nukem Forever released recently.

Duke Nukem Forever - 2007 Screenshot - Gamasutra Job

3D Realms put up a job advert for programmers on GamaSutra and included with it the screenshot to the right (and I'm afraid that's full size). Initially there was a lot of speculation regarding the shot (like; was it a pre-render or in-game graphics?) and producer/designer George Broussard at 3D Realms has since confirmed it's in-game graphics for DNF.

For those who aren't familiar with the game, it was official announced back in 1997. Since then it's changed engines and been restarted 3 times now (if I'm remembering correctly). It's also the game that was first given the "When it's done" release date.

I really hope DNF will still be something a bit special when it is finally released. I personally think it will, though I doubt of the calibre warranting 10+ years development time. From the videos that were released of the early versions, it looks like I would have been more than happy to play the 1998 and 2001 versions. I also spent a lot of time when I was younger playing Duke Nukem 1, 2 and 3D, they were all great games. I still even remember the cheat for all the keys and weapons in Duke Nukem 1, Backspace + Page Down. ;)

Anyway, the new screenshot and talk about DNF reminded me of a interesting little list I'd seen before and I managed to track it down again. :) It's a list of things that have happened during/taken less time than DNF's development. Here's a few choice items from the list:

The following things have happened since Duke Nukem Forever was announced…

  • Every Massive Multiplayer Online game and expansion with the exception of Meridian 59.
  • Black Isle was formed, released seven titles and was shut down.
  • When Duke Nukem Forever was announced, the fastest processor available to consumers was a 233Mhz Pentium. Since then the clock speed of consumer processors has increased over 16 times (32 times counting dual cores), and the fabrication process has decreased from 250nm to 65nm.
  • Over 50 major earthquakes have shaken the world, which have shortened the Earth day by 2.68 microseconds.
  • Every Pixar movie aside from Toy Story.
  • The Voyager 1 spacecraft has travelled 8.8 billion miles from Earth.
  • 19 wars have begun.
  • 5 wars have ended.
  • Approximately 509,373,306 people have died and 661,373,082 have been born.

You can view the full list here.

Finally, if you'd like to check out the videos released of the old DNF engines/games you can find them below:

Amazing how many random things you retain eh? ^^

IDDQD is one I think I'll always remember, and the Contra/Konami Code of course (Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, Start).
